Basic Function:  The primary responsibility of a Behavior Specialist (BS) utilizing clinical interventions in groups and with individuals designed by the treatment team and written in the Individual Plan of Care.  The BS utilizes developmentally appropriate activities and the early childhood classroom as the group environment for increasing the child’s behavior skills.  

Scope: Includes but is not limited to working in small groups in classrooms, playgrounds, buses, field trips, outside weather including summer heat, winter cold, wind, rain, and snow. Services are based on children’s needs, Medicaid requirements and Children’s Place standards. 

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Education:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, Social Work, Psychology, or another Mental Health field
  • Master’s Degree in above related field preferred.

Physical Skills Required:

  • Speak clearly.
  • See and hear.
  • Perform physical activities that require use of arms, legs and moving the whole-body including but not limited to stooping, kneeling, and lifting children.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Word processing computer skills
  • Clinical writing and proofreading
  • Time management
  • Working with others

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Primary care provider for assigned children to maintain the safety and physical wellbeing including but not limited to diaper changing and bathing.
  2. Participating member of the treatment team
  3. Plans and implements the day-to-day individualized interventions as directed by the IPOC.
  4. Responsible for the implementation of mental health group and daily preschool activities.
  5. Utilizes positive techniques of guidance, including, but not limited to modeling, demonstrating, coaching, practicing, and supporting children.
  6. Utilizes appropriate diagnostic and screening tools.
  7. Completes written records.
  8. Other duties as assigned.
