Position Summary

The Advising Fellow will gain critical skills essential to advising and student support in the current Higher Education environment. Following the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) core principles, the Fellow will be trained on conceptual, informational, and relational advising practices.

Primary responsibilities for the Advising Fellow center on student success coaching; carrying a caseload of academic advisees; and teaching and advising students in a section of ELN 1010: First-Year Advising Seminar.

Additional responsibilities and opportunities include training on the student subpopulations that the Office of Academic Advising serves. The Fellow will collaborate with colleagues in the Koenigsberger Learning Center as well as campus partners on programming and outreach critical to student success.

The Advising Fellow is a 10-month paid position including an $1850 monthly stipend, meal plan, and on-campus apartment. The apartment houses all campus Fellows and includes an individual bedroom and bathroom and all utilities. This position includes the annual cost of a membership to NACADA. Additionally, the Advising Fellow will receive professional development funding.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Qualified candidates must have completed their graduate degree in a related field such as college student personnel/development, counseling, or higher education administration, OR be in the final semester of their related graduate degree program. Demonstrated first-year/advising delivery, program design, assessment, and diversity education experience is preferred. Candidates must be able to commit to the full 10-month appointment to begin July 15, 2024.

Job Duties
  • Student Success Coaching:
  • Support a caseload of students through one-on-one meetings to help students improve time management, organizational skills, and study strategies
  • Assist students in identifying challenges and barriers to academic success, help students devise and implement learning plans related to these challenges
  • Student success coaching for a caseload of students identified as needing this support Develop student success programming through collaboration of the units within the KLC and with critical campus partners
  • Teaching and Advising:
  • Teach 1 section of ELN 1010: First Year Advising Seminar in the fall term. Students in this course will be the advisees of the Fellow.
  • Carry an advising caseload of 20-25 students, including a small number of returning students
  • Provide general advising support to students and faculty advisors
  • Curriculum development and teaching techniques focused on learning outcomes of the ELN 1010: First-Year Advising Seminar
  • Weekly office hours in residential neighborhoods for general advising questions
  • Advisor Training and Professional Development:
  • Training for advising special populations supported by the Office of Academic Advising, including, but not limited to: Exploratory, Transfer, First-Year, International, and Readmitted students
  • Academic advising as coaching pedagogy and techniques
  • Participation in the NACADA Region 3 spring 2025 conference, including learning how to create and submit a proposal for a presentation submission
