Position Summary

As a member of the Division of Student Life and the Student Involvement team, the Assistant Director of Student Involvement assists in leading efforts that engage students in meaningful campus involvement and align their work to advance our strategic plans. The Student Involvement team supports student success by mentoring and coaching through the development of rich relationships. The assistant directors work directly with student leaders and collaborate across the university to provide community and leadership development opportunities that enhance the student experience. As a member of the Student Involvement team, the assistant directors are responsible for serving as active members of the staff in presence and communication, maintaining a high level of professionalism, and completing various administrative tasks that support the daily operations of the department.

In addition, this assistant director is responsible for working closely with student leaders by focusing on the development of rich mentoring relationships. This position also works with other Student Involvement Assistant Directors by creating an environment that engages students in transformative co-curricular learning experiences and promotes positive growth and development. This assistant director enhances the student experience by fostering greater alignment between university values and the activities and actions of student organizations and the fraternities and sororities on campus. Specifically, this position provides direct advisement to the National Pan Hellenic Council and serves as a chapter mentor to the NPHC fraternities and sororities. This position is also responsible for implementing late night, campus-wide programming and provides direction and support for Late Night Elon. This assistant director also engages all fraternity and sorority members in campus-wide programs (including campus traditions and late-night events); and develops activities that are welcoming to all students.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Completed bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of post-bachelor's experience in higher education required.

Preferred Education and Experience

Completed master's degree in higher education, student personnel, or related field and 1-2 years of experience (including graduate assistantships/apprenticeships) in higher education strongly preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with two to four years of related experience working with student organizations, student activities, sororities and fraternities, and/or leadership development, as well as experience advising students from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Affiliation with an inter/national sorority or fraternity is preferred, but not required.

Required Other Training, Certifications, or Licensing

Strong written and oral communication skills
Commitment to, knowledge of, and experience with leadership education, diversity and inclusion, student development, conflict resolution, and organization development
Experience with training, facilitation, and presenting to college student populations

Job Duties
  • Student Involvement Team
    • Serve as an active member of the Student Involvement staff, contribute to a relationship-rich environment that fosters student growth and success, and support broader department programs and events (i.e. new student orientation, fall/spring organization fairs, student tailgating, formal recruitment and intake processes, and Homecoming)
    • Support departmental strategic planning, goal setting, priority completion, evaluation and assessment, and data-driven decision making
    • Assist with and attend selected high risk contracted events and programs hosted within Student Involvement
    • Monitor budgets totaling in excess of $250,000; guide spending and secure funding for program initiatives as needed
    • Negotiate, review, and request contracts with agents/students to plan events
    • Align assessment and reporting mechanisms with the improvement and strategic planning of the department, division, and university
    • Develop and maintain supportive campus partnerships with colleagues and university departments
    • Meet with the Associate Director of Student Involvement on a regular basis, actively participate in team meetings, and assume additional responsibilities within the scope of the position as assigned by the associate director
  • Advising and Mentorship
    • Develop a relationship-rich culture by serving as a chapter mentor to the members and student leaders of National Pan Hellenic Council chapters
    • Advise and support the National Pan Hellenic Council, empowering students to take ownership of their community and experience
    • Develop and maintain relationships with fraternity and sorority community constituents including inter/national headquarters staff, advisory leadership, faculty/staff advisors, alumni, and families
    • Foster relationships with students that model care for the individual, inclusive excellence, personal and peer accountability, and integration with their campus experience
    • Promote a culture of respect with and among student leaders that exemplifies the Elon Honor Code, high ethic of care and positive bystander behavior
  • Programming and Development
    • Work collaboratively with university programs, departments, and student organizations to provide well-considered student-centered late-night campus programming
    • Identify opportunities for organization leaders to assist in the development of the late-night calendar and integrate the fraternity and sorority community into campus late night and weekend programming initiatives
    • Implement comprehensive marketing plan for late night programming and manage all publicity strategies to create campus wide knowledge of events
    • Facilitate opportunities that encourage deeper collaborative work among student organizations and within the fraternity and sorority community, including individual chapters and governing councils
    • Model and promote inclusive excellence and the celebration of diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives between and among fraternities and sororities
    • Coordinate council officer attendance at regional and/or national student leadership development conferences, including registration, travel, and accommodations
    • Serve as primary contact and reviewer for NPHC council and chapter event requests and approvals
    • Provide guidance/training and connect students to campus resources to help ensure fraternity and sorority events follow established University policies, procedures, and practices
  • Division of Student Life
    • Positively represent Student Involvement, the Division of Student Life, and Elon University in all communications, presentations, and campus involvement
    • Collaborate with division and university partners to enhance the student experience
    • Support university events, including but not limited to: convocations, Commencement, Family Weekend, events related to Admissions, and New Student Orientation
    • Serve as a member of a Student Life Care and Response Team, which includes either serving in a rotational on-call emergency response role or providing initial outreach and follow up support for student concerns
    • Serve on university, divisional, or departmental committees, task forces, and search committees
    • Other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean/Director of Student Involvement
