Job Summary

Responsible for all operations related to managing the museum's digital media including organizing, storing, and making the museum's digital assets and associated metadata accessible via the digital catalog. Provides imaging and digital catalog support to the museum's collections, exhibitions, marketing, library, and programming departments. Work closely with the Metadata Specialist to communicate metadata standards and clean-up needs and develop longrange plans for efficient and sustainable digital asset and collection information archiving. As the museum grows and evolves, they will lend their expertise to the inclusion of new forms of media onto the digital catalog platform, such as video, and 3D imaging and the implementation of Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF), hOCR (HTML Optical Character Recognition), and open access protocols.
  • Establishes and maintains systems necessary to manage the creation, preservation, and use of standardized collection metadata and digital assets within the institution.
  • Develops and documents policies and procedures related to the selection, creation, preservation, access, and dissemination of digitized collection materials and collaborates closely with appropriate in-house staff to create documentation.
  • Performs complex scripting and SQL queries to extract regularly, mass format, manipulate, and clean up content from the museums two main cataloging systems; Discovery and Alma, and upload refined object collection metadata and images into the digital catalog system.
  • Provides reports on digital catalog usage, web analytics, and tracks metrics related to the creation of digital assets.
  • Keeps up to date on the development of new features and standards in the Islandora open-source community, and strategizes for the inclusion and adaptation of new features onto the digital catalog site.
  • Works with Metadata Specialist to organize and prioritize metadata cleanup tasks and ensure that tasks align with registration, curatorial, and library department goals.
  • Regularly conducts quality control checks on the catalog and is the lead for troubleshooting and creating maintenance tickets with catalog vendor, Born-Digital.
  • Participates in various interdepartmental working groups, such as those responsible for developing overall digital media and digital assets strategy.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline and five (5) years' experience in related field or a Master's degree and three (3) years' experience in related field.
Desired Qualifications
  • Direct hands-on experience with relational databases, as well as data transformation skills using a variety of software and tools, such as MySQL, MARC edit and OpenRefine.
  • Master's degree in the humanities and/or data science with 3-5 years of experience maintaining a digital asset management system in an administrator role; or a Bachelor's degree in the humanities and/or data science with 6-8 years of experience maintaining a digital asset management system in an administrator role.
  • Experience implementing IIIF standards for museum collections and working with IIIF viewers such as Mirador or Open Seadragon.
  • Experience managing a Drupal-based content management system. Islandora experience or experience working with open-source software and communities is a plus.
