The Cape Cod Times, part of Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a reporter to cover high school sports. This reporter will join a team committed to serving an audience hungry for increased local sports content. We are looking for a reporter who can produce quality, unique content that will drive readers to the site and lead to subscription sales.
Job Details:
The reporter will be expected to report sports news, create weekly features and analysis for our current and potential subscribers, cover live sporting events and produce enterprise stories and compelling features that provide exceptional storytelling, context, and analysis.
Typical Job Duties:
·The primary focus will be on high school sports and the Cape Cod Baseball League.
·Be a curious, assertive, flexible, and self-starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news and trending topics with urgency.
·Develop sources among athletic directors, coaches, athletes, and parents.
·Give particular attention to developing relationships with these sources in underserved districts to ensure high school sports coverage in diverse, inclusive, and equitable.
·Be adept at using social media, especially Twitter and Instagram, to generate interest in and promote new content.
·Optimize stories for target audience groups using SEO and metrics information.
·Uses independent judgment in day-to-day activities; demonstrated success in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
·Normally receives instructions on routine work, detailed instruction on new projects and assignments.
·Researches, reports, and writes news articles for publication.
·Recognizes newsworthy events and trends and understands how to connect with our audience on multiple platforms.
·Understands the standards and ethics around newsgathering and can execute most of its primary forms at a commendable level, including source interviews, use of public records, data analysis and primary and secondary source research.
·Has developed enough topical knowledge to provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues. Understands good storytelling and successfully develops ideas.
·Can write news stories and more complex enterprise pieces with minimal guidance.
·Can execute on special projects by working closely with editors.
Knowledge and Skills
·Adept at taking photos and video and will file quickly across platforms: mobile, desktop and social media.
·Strong command of AP grammar and style.
·Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and publication ready.
·Is passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
·Is comfortable using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to enhance reporting and promote stories.
·Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
·Excels in a fast-paced news environment and understands the digital first mission.
·Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.
Required Work Experience, Training, and Education
·Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
·Daily newspaper experience.
·1-3 years of related work experience
·This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
