Public Information Officer
POSITION SUMMARY: The Public Information Officer will work closely with the Superintendent and/or designee to coordinate the communications program and related activities. They will serve as a spokesperson for the school system, provide community outreach, and facilitate business/school partnerships. The Public Information Officer will work to enhance School Board Priority #7 by promoting partnerships between students, staff, families, and the community through communication, respect, trust, and transparency.
REQUIRED:
• Bachelor's degree or higher with major coursework in journalism, public relations, communications, or a related field
• Minimum three years of experience in the field preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
• Proofreading and editing skills required
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, social media, electronic newsletter creation, publishing, and website management
• A portfolio of work samples will be required at the interview
• Ability to understand and follow all federal, state, and local laws and all school board policies related to work in communications.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Directs the communication for the entire school division and maintains effective communication pathways for staff, parents, community members, and the media.
• Maintains the division website and social media pages with frequent updates, pictures, and relevant information.
• Coordinates a variety of activities (recognition programs, special events, media relations, community relations, phone notification system).
• Coordinates the filming, producing, and editing of video communications promoting the division.
• Coordinates communications with news media, as well as coordinating interviews with school officials for the purpose of answering questions and gathering information for reporters concerning division activities.
• Provides effective communication to local and regional media outlets through press releases, articles, and by providing photographs to promote school events.
• Develops long and short-range plans to ensure organizational objectives are achieved efficiently and in a timely manner.
• Maintains positive relationships with students, administrators, parents, school board, staff, and the community.
• Works within the allowed budget and participates in the budget process. Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and conferences for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
• Prepares a wider variety of often complex materials (Plans, budgets, funding requests, event programs, news releases, parent and community letters etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, providing audit references, making presentations, and/or providing support materials for requested actions.
• Researches information required to manage assignments including reviewing relevant policies, current practices, etc. for the purpose of informing and communicating.
• Responds to emergency situations both during and after normal working hours for the purpose of receiving and conveying information needed for effective decision making.
• Maintains confidentiality in all matters
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
• Maintains up to date knowledge of rapidly changing communication technologies and platforms
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent, or other appropriate administrator.
SALARY RANGE: Starts at $42,000 - Salary commensurate with experience; 12 month/260-day contract
