General Definition of Work

Performs semiskilled work servicing, lubricating, and assisting with the maintenance and repair of transit vehicles, preparing and maintaining appropriate records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision of the Lead Mechanic. This position is classified as an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events.

Shift: Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

$ 2,000 hiring bonus payable at the following intervals:
  • Satisfactorily complete 2 months of employment - $600
  • Satisfactorily complete 4 months of employment - $600
  • Complete 6 months of employment and receive a successful rating at the end of probation evaluation - $800

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.   • Checks buses and ensures buses are in safe operating condition
  • Performs repairs or holds buses as needed
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance service on gas and diesel powered vehicles and diagnoses problems
  • Makes all necessary repairs as instructed to vehicles and equipment
  • Performs road tests on vehicles
  • Changes, repairs, and replaces tires and brakes; rotates and balances tires; performs front end alignments
  • Changes oil, fluids, and lights
  • Diagnoses and repairs wheel chair lifts
  • Replaces parts as necessary; rebuilds bus parts, tie rod assemblies, etc.
  • Trains new staff and instructs them on safe equipment use and operation
  • Picks up parts
  • Cleans shop regularly
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, vans, buses and maintenance equipment
  • Thorough knowledge of necessary safety precautions
  • Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work
  • Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and lap top with the applicable software programs to keep records of repairs and service operations and to prepare reports
  • Ability to lift heavy objects
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors and the general public
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Moderate experience in the maintenance and servicing of automotive and power driven equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements
  • Valid commercial driver's license (Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement) in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a satisfactory driving record
  • This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing guidelines as set forth by the Federal Transit Administration and the US Department of Transportation in 49 CFR Part 40, and Part 655, as amended
  • A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position
  • Drug and alcohol testing guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration, will be followed during the employment period
Physical Requirements
  • This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting
  • Work has standard vision requirements
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
  • Work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment
  • Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic)
