Job Description Summary

Provides security coverage for Wake Forest University. Conducts foot patrols and security checks, monitors areas for unauthorized users, responds to incidents, reports hazards, assists with special events and crowd control and completes necessary reports.

Job Description

Essential Functions:
  • Security checks of buildings owned or leased by Wake Forest University patrolling all levels of interior and exterior perimeter of buildings during the entire shift.
  • Performs routine rounds of the buildings and the parking lots monitoring campus for unauthorized users.
  • Protects and safeguards the Wake Forest students and employees from criminal and or potentially dangerous situations.
  • Protects property and vehicles from theft and vandalism and assists the Campus Police Officers in deterring criminal activity. Also, builds a rapport with the students and employees, allowing them to have a sense of safety and security.
  • Completes found property reports for any unattended items. Completes reports and uses two-way-radio to communicate with University Police Communications Center.
  • Assists in providing crowd control during special events.
  • Reports suspicious people or activities when found.
  • Provides information and directions as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Assists Police Officers in prevention and detection of suspicious or criminal activity. (Ex. Thefts, larcenies, Malicious Injury to Property)
  • Reports, documents, prepares testimony for Student Judicial Hearings.
  • Routinely surveys the campus to check for any safety, health or environmental concerns. Completes operation reports and/or work orders to report any findings of a potential problem, notifies the proper University Department; and offers suggestions on possible solutions for dealing with the particular situation.
Other Functions:
  • Gate House Operations: (If Assigned): Monitors all vehicle traffic entering the Reynolda Campus. Checks all vehicles entering the campus for a valid Wake Forest registration in the form of a gate pass or hangtag. Gatehouses are staffed 365 days a year and Security officers assigned are required to work in adverse weather conditions. Verifies via telephone and logbooks any student, staff, faculty or alumni who's WFU ID will not allow them to enter the campus. Log the name and driver's license number of any unregistered visitor along with their vehicle information. Issues temporary passes to students, staff or faculty who do not have a current gate pass on their vehicles in order to allow them adequate time to register their vehicle correctly. When a temporary gate pass is issued, it will be reported to the Parking and Transportation office for registration purposes.
  • Night Watch Operations (If Assigned): Performs foot patrols of all residence and academic buildings on campus. Monitors activities in and around buildings, parking lots and courtyard areas. Foot patrols are conducted in adverse weather conditions. Reports to the University Police Communications any damaged property, vandalism, suspicious activity, criminal activity, open doors or propped doors, unsecured hazardous materials, found property or assistance given to Patrol Officers or Residence Life & Housing staff members. Writes operation reports concerning incidents of suspicious activity; found property, unsafe conditions in a particular area, or light and emergency call box outages.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • High school graduate with two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid NC Driver license and good driving record; must be insurable.
  • Skill in building security and lock procedures.
  • Skill in providing protection services.
  • Ability to write detailed and accurate reports.
  • Ability to detect criminal activity and assist Police Officers with investigations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use a computer for report writing and timekeeping.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures and make logical decisions.
  • Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely, such as vehicle wheelchair lift and two-way-radios.
  • Knowledge of Campus Student Judicial System.
  • Ability to prepare cases and testify in court.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to successfully complete First Aid, CPR and Blood borne Pathogen training
  • Basic knowledge of Hazardous Materials.
  • Ability to work during holidays, weekends, day and night shifts and periodic overtime.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Security experience, particularly in a campus environment, is preferred.
Accountabilities:
  • Assists in providing problem solving assistance for students in cooperation with other University departments.
  • Reviews, trains and oversees work of less-experienced officers in some circumstances.
  • Works under general supervision. Reports to Security Supervisor or Police Sergeant.
  • Uses Wake Forest University Police Department, Reynolds Gym, Z. Smith Reynolds Library, LJVM Coliseum, Gate House/Night watch and Worrell Professional Center Standard Operations Procedures in making decisions
  • Uses the University Student Handbook and Guide to Community Living for guidelines when handling situations concerning students.
  • Assists the Campus Police Department in Community Oriented Policing.
  • Work requires contact with Departmental and University staff, students, faculty, visitors, and alumni.
Physical Requirements:
  • Light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Climbing, crouching, standing, walking, lifting, talking, hearing. Visual acuity is required to observe unauthorized or unlawful, unsafe/hazardous situations, behaviors or individuals, to describe physical descriptions of people, articles, or activities, to view suspicious activities, to perform routine security checks, to complete written reports and view computer terminals. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions; subject to occasional extreme heat and cold; subject to hazards.
  • May be required to stand on foot posts for long periods of time.
  • May be required to run certain distances in emergency situations.
  • May be required to subdue and detain individuals in emergency situations.
Environmental Conditions:
  • Will be required to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials or chemicals.
